ProTools is jaw-droppingly awesome. Audacity is minimal but sometimes adequate. Ardour is just frustrating. I wish Jokosher the best of luck, but right now it’s a toy.
I just read about REAPER today, and downloaded it. All 3MB of it. It’s not ProTools, but it’s pretty impressive (and doesn’t require buying an M-box). I don’t have any projects right now, but next time I do, I’m going to give it a serious shot.
Windows only, alas.

I’ve seen REAPER running on Wine. The JackLab people showed it on LinuxTag two weeks ago.
They said it’s super stable and running via a ASIO translation layer on jack. Low latency, real time mode…
Unfortunately not free.

How, exactly, does Pro Tools LE compare favorably to REAPER? Having worked extensively on an HD3 Accel system with all the goodies, I could see calling that “jaw-droppingly awesome,” maybe. But REAPER completely outshines PTLE in every way I can think of and it kind of puts even the HD systems to shame, especially when you start talking about things like value for money.
And the REAPER guys as well as the JackLab folks have gone to great lengths to make sure that REAPER runs well on WINE. No good reason not to try it out… maybe I’ll catch you on NINJAM.

I actually find Ardour pretty good — it takes a while to get to grips with it, but once you take the time to learn a few of the basics, it all falls into place. I’d love to replace my use of it with jokosher one day, but like you said, jokosher is just a toy at the moment.

Yeah REAPER is incredible. 3MB to pack in all those features that the big platforms can barely fit into the GBs they take up. Amazing stuff.

REAPER rocks because it was made by Justin Frankel of Winamp fame: http://www.1014.org/
I prefer its original name & form factor though: http://www.jesusonic.com/

I was always intimidated by the idea using of ardour too, but once I started to use it, it was actually quite nice.
